I am currently taking a class called Pathways of Folklore Scholarship. It is basically a history of folklore as a field. So far, there have been three classes, and each time I go I think, I just want to take classes for the rest of my life. I want to take classes and do all the reading, I just don't really want to write papers...
This class made me get a twitter account.
I don't understand twitter. It confuses me. But, I will continue to post things about folklore and what I'm reading for class.
Like this week, we were learning about how governments used folklore to further their political aims. Like the Nazis and Soviets. It reminded me of every state folk ensemble from eastern Europe. Most of them, if not all, had their beginnings in the 1930s because of government employment of all things folklore.
Side Note: Turns out there are some good things that came from Nazi's. The tape recorder. The VW bug. And the establishment of folklore as an employable field.
Anyway, I tweeted about my thoughts about folkdance ensembles. But the 140 character limit really made it hard for me to actually share my thoughts... It is going to take some getting used to...
Watch this- The Ukrainian state ensemble doing hopak. Amazing.

Holy canoli. I love it.
ReplyDeleteWhat was amazing was that they are all the exact same height. Makes for added precision. Otherwise they look like BYU Folkdancers on a good year except the guys had more tricks. Girls were the same prim and pretty.
ReplyDeleteI'm so glad you posted these things. It makes me grateful for all the good that I've been able to experience in my life...from reading to folk dance, it's all made for a very rich and full experience so far.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad we get to share in our love for it!
